PM instructs monthly reports to be prepared to monitor government projects

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has directed every department, government agency, and ministry to prepare monthly reports for each project being implemented.

He said, with this step, monitoring can be carried out to ensure that all announced projects are indeed being implemented.

"Otherwise, when we announce projects but their launch only happens before elections, I see no sincerity.

"So, I hope, this culture (of monthly reports) from civil servants to departments, agencies, ministries, and ministers can be implemented so that we can monitor effectively," he said during the Madani Rakyat Central Zone Program here, today.

The prime minister cited the implementation of flood mitigation projects as an example, which took a long time to complete. He said, without monthly monitoring, these projects would be stalled.

"The same goes for small projects under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security related to the quality and productivity of rice, land status, and acid content levels. "At present, reports like this are only provided when ministers visit, or we have to wait for reports every six months," he said.

He revealed that the lack of monthly reports resulted in cases that have remained unresolved for decades.

"There is one case regarding land for the construction of a clinic, with monitoring it was discovered that the government took land 40 years ago for the clinic's construction but until now it has not been developed.

"Some cases do have reasonable excuses, such as the land being peat soil unsuitable for development or initial allocations being insufficient.

"If there is monthly monitoring, then we do not have to wait 40 years, causing dissatisfaction among the people," he said.

Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said matters like these are now being reviewed by the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU), Prime Minister's Department (JPM).

In related developments, the prime minister stressed that the government is also enhancing the training capacity for civil servants.
