Zahir Mosque: A jewel of Malaysian heritage and architectural splendor

IN the heart of Alor Star, Kedah, the Zahir Mosque stands as a testament to Malaysia's rich architectural and historical heritage.

Built in 1912, this mosque is not only among the oldest in Malaysia but also holds the honour of being one of the world's top 10 most beautiful mosques.

Its significance goes beyond its architectural beauty, serving as a cultural icon of the state and pivotal venue for the annual state Quran reading competition.

HISTORY AND ARCHITECTURE

The Zahir Mosque's foundation is steeped in history, erected on the hallowed ground where Kedah warriors, fallen during the Siamese invasion of 1821, were laid to rest.

This site's transformation into a place of worship symbolises peace and reverence for the valiant souls.

The mosque's design draws inspiration from the Azizi Mosque in North Sumatera, evident in their strikingly similar domes and ornamented facades.

One cannot help but be mesmerised by the mosque's five black domes, with the main dome majestically encircled by five smaller ones.

This design intricately represents the Five Pillars of Islam, seamlessly blending spiritual symbolism with architectural prowess.

The mosque's facade is adorned with double columns and arches, enriched with carvings and Islamic calligraphy that narrate tales of devotion and artistry.

A PEACEFUL SANCTUARY

Visitors and worshippers alike are welcomed into a praying hall that perfectly epitomises symmetry, measuring an exact square of 62 feet by 62 feet.

The dome overhead is a canvas of exquisite Quranic verses, inviting one to ponder and reflect.

Surrounding the main hall, an 8-foot wide verandah provides a tranquil ambience for contemplation or a serene walk, further enhancing the mosque's spiritual atmosphere.

Despite the passage of time, Zahir Mosque has preserved its original glory, undergoing only two significant renovations in 1960 and 1975. This preservation effort underscores the community's dedication to maintaining its historical and cultural essence.

VISITING ZAHIR MOSQUE

Zahir Mosque's doors are open to all, provided visitors adhere to respectful attire.

Modesty is key, with guidelines requiring shoulders and knees to be covered. Women are encouraged to don a headscarf upon entering the mosque, adhering to Islamic traditions of modesty.

GETTING THERE

Located adjacent to Alor Star Tower and a stone's throw away from Aman Central Mall, the mosque's accessibility makes it a must-visit for anyone in Alor Setar.

Its central location is a testament to its integral role in the city's cultural and religious landscape.
