Penang mulls shorter work hours for civil servants on Friday during Ramadan

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government will discuss tomorrow on whether civil servants in the state will only work half-day on Fridays during the fasting month of Ramadan.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said they have yet to discuss the matter.

"We can discuss it tomorrow during the state exco meeting," he said.

He was asked on the possibility of civil servants working only half-day on Fridays during the fasting month of Ramadan, as in Pahang.

It was reported that Pahang civil servants would only work half-day on Fridays during the fasting month of Ramadan.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail said the state government had agreed to reduce the working hours on Fridays till 12.30pm.

Wan Rosdy said the directive is in line with the Sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah's decree.

Earlier, Chow was met after opening a Ramadan bazaar organised by the Penang Muslim League at Lebuh Queen here this evening.

The event is a tradition which Chow attends annually since he first became the assemblyman for Padang Kota.

This is the 20th year the Ramadan bazaar is being held.

Chow said he spoke to traders at the Ramadan bazaar who assured him that the prices of food sold remained unchanged.
