Assemblyman says badly-damaged mattresses, pillows at boarding school will be discarded, replaced

KUALA LUMPUR: Netizens were appalled to see viral photos of badly damaged mattresses, beds and pillows from a school hostel in Serian, Sarawak recently.

However, Tebedu assemblyman Dr Simon Sinang Bada said the items were scheduled for disposal and that students at the hostel would be given brand new beddings and items.

He said some people from the school had taken the pictures of the beds and its mattresses and pillows while they were awaiting permission to discard them. He assured that boarders would not utilise them.

"Overall, mattresses, pillows, and the hostel are in good condition and they are ready to be used by incoming boarders," he was quoted as saying to the Borneo Post.

Sinang was responding to a post on a news portal yesterday in which a student's father expressed his disgust upon seeing the worn-out mattresses and pillows when visiting his two sons at the school.

He claimed the mattresses and pillows were very filthy, odorous and were badly damaged and that even the bed linen were in deplorable state.

Sinang, however explained that it would not be a permanent situation for the school hostel residents.

"Today, the matter has been settled," he said.

He said he was notified of the situation by an officer from the District Education Office who was present at the school for a division-level first fay of school programme.
