Amanah criticises Muafakat Nasional's idea of ummah reconciliation

ALOR STAR: Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) has expressed disdain to the idea of ummah reconciliation under Muafakat Nasional (MN).

Amanah vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar claimed that MN is nothing but Pas' political agenda to topple the unity government.

He also questioned why Pas is so obsessed with uniting the ummah now, after rejecting the idea of forming a unity government after the 15th General Election (GE15) in November 2022.

"MN was formed to wrest power (from the PH government in 2020) which led to national political instability at that time and they eventually managed to gain power.

"After GE15, upon realising that they did not achieve a simple majority to form the new government, they should have heeded the Yang diPertuan Agong's advice to form a unity government, but they shot down the idea.

"This clearly showed that they are against reconciliation and unity among our community and within the country," he said.

Mahfuz also took a jibe at Pas and Perikatan Nasional over alleged attempts to topple the Unity government after it was formed over a year ago.

"After the federal government was formed, there were many political stunts to topple the unity government. We have heard about Dubai Move or even Chow Kit Move, for that matter," he said.

Mahfuz, who is also Kedah Pakatan Harapan chairman, said the main reason Amanah rejected any political cooperation under MN is because it would be a betrayal to the unity government.

"The cooperation under MN that is offered to us is to wrest power. To me this a treason to the people's mandate that led to the formation of a unity government through the decree of the King.

"Sadly, they are still at it (attempts to toppling the current government."

Mahfuz was commenting on Pas vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar's remarks that he is not opposing the idea of reviving MN's alliance with Umno.

The Terengganu menteri besar was reported as saying that Umno, together with Pas splinter group Amanah and other Malay-Muslim parties, should unite for the people.

Pas spiritual leader Datuk Hashim Jasin had, on Feb 15, said the Islamist party would not close the door to a cooperation with Umno to revive MN.

On Feb 25, Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, however, said Pas was insincere about reviving the pact, as it was not Umno who left MN, but Pas.
