Economy Ministry to meet Sarawak govt over Padu registration

SHAH ALAM: A meeting will be held next week between the Economy Ministry and the Sarawak government regarding the registration of Sarawakians in the Central Database Hub (Padu).

This is following an order addressed to district and administrative officers in the state, against registering on Padu that has gone viral on social media.

Rafizi said the instruction (based on the memo) was meant for the district and administrative officers.

"However, registration by individuals via the Padu portal is as usual," he told a press conference after attending the Padu town hall held at MBSA Convention Centre here.

Rafizi was responding to a question on an order to the administrative officers in the state not to register citizens' information with Padu until further notice.

"If we were to look at the process of deciding to use Padu at the central and state government level, it has undergone a long process since May last year.

"It was also tabled to chief ministers and menteris besar, before we decided to proceed with it.

"In terms of governance, it is under the purview of the National Statistics and Data Council, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

"In fact, Sarawak was among the states with the highest number of registrations (since Padu's inception on Jan 2).

"Therefore, next week the ministry will discuss further the matter with the state government."

On the state's Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Hamzah, who said that the form that Malaysians were required to fill out when registering themselves was akin to "stripping yourself naked", Rafizi said it was the former's personal view.

"I have watched the video and it was his personal view. Everyone has their own views."
