Tuaran MP calls for sensitivity and fairness in handling of socks controversy

KUALA LUMPUR: Tuaran member of parliament Datuk Seri Panglima Wilfred Madius Tangauhas called for greater sensitivity and fairness in the handling of the KK Supermart fiasco and the recent uproar over socks bearing the word 'Allah'.

In a press statement issued today, Madius said the issue had sparked reactions that were out of proportion, underscoring the importance of ensuring fairness in the resulting consequences.

He said: "As a Sabahan with a diverse circle of Muslim friends and relatives, I understand the emotions stirred by the case.

"However, the focus should not only be on whether an action is offensive, but also on countering negative publicity and rebuilding goodwill."

He added that disproportionate punishments were unjust and may provoke the flouting of laws.

Madius expressed frustration at instances where individuals from outside certain cultural backgrounds made presumptions about religious practices.

He added that the public must adhere to the wisdom of "to each his own" and respect every religious congregation or cultural community's right to decide what constitutes offensive acts.

In a bid to address the fallout from the socks controversy, the MP proposed constructive measures for KK Supermart and related entities to sponsor charity works targeting the Muslim community in rebuilding understanding.

He added that there should be a role established within the operational framework of KK Supermart, "an equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) quality control officer role for example".

Madius also urged for broader cross-cultural sensitivity training within the business sector with partners like the National Human Rights Commission (Suhakam), the Ministry of National Unity and Jakim to play their part.

"More than understanding, this can be an opportunity to promote inclusion across the board, in line with the Madani government's value system."
