Sarawak approves two road upgrade projects in Ulu Layar

BETONG: The Sarawak government has sanctioned two road alignment upgrade projects in Ulu Layar, totalling RM45 million, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said these projects include upgrading the Mara, Selangking, Nanga Sela, and Tanjung Paoh roads at a cost of RM26 million, and the Penyulok, Nanga Penebak, and Ulu Penebak roads at RM19 million.

The design phase for these upgrades is complete, with procurement now underway through open tender methods by the Public Works Department (PWD). The upgrade will transform these rural paths to PWD's Grade R1 tar-sealed roads, enhancing comfort and safety for users.

During a recent inspection in Ulu Layar, Uggah, who is also the assemblyman for Bukit Saban, highlighted the new alignments' role in boosting pepper production efficiency by shortening the travel distance to Betong town.

He hoped the improved infrastructure will not only facilitate pepper farming but also promote economic activities like cash crop cultivation, fruit farming, and livestock rearing.

Also, Uggah anticipates these upgrades will stimulate tourism in the area, with plans to develop Bukit Sadok as a tourist attraction featuring a replica of Panglima Rentap's fort and other facilities. Longhouses nearby are expected to offer tourism products to attract visitors.

Additionally, Uggah distributed agricultural machinery to four longhouses in Ulu Layar, aiding local farming communities.
