Embracing Rukun Negara key to unity in multiracial society, says Lee Lam Thye

LANGKAWI: The values of Rukun Negara should be fully embraced to ensure the survival of racial harmony in the country, said social activist Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.

He stressed that the nation's unity would be at risk if people failed to understand and embrace the spirit of Rukun Negara in their daily lives.

"Each objective and the five principles of the Rukun Negara has their implicit message that should be understood and practiced in our daily life.

"For example, the fifth principle of the Rukun Negara 'Kesopanan dan Kesusilaan' emphasises on personality and attitude that should exist in oneself toward building an inclusive community," he said at the signing of his biography 'Lee Lam Thye-Recalling a Lifetime of Service' at The Frangipani Langkawi here.

Lee said the biography authored by two journalists Sofea Chok Suat Ling and P. Selvarani was launched by the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah with the aims to motivate and inspire the youths.

"I hope this book will inspire more Malaysians especially the youths to render their service to Malaysia through volunteering or charity.

"I am not looking forward to make profit (from the book) and to date, I have donated over RM120,000 (from the sales) to the charitable organisations nationwide," he said.

The book is published in Bahasa Malaysia, English, Mandarin and Tamil, and reflects his journey from his early days as an assemblyman at the age of 23, his works and interest as well as his contribution to the country.
