Up to police to act against Akmal for incitement, says Saifuddin

PUTRAJAYA: The Home Ministry will leave it to the police to assess and take action against Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Salleh over the KK Mart socks issue.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, said he left the matter for the police to act following posts on social media showing Akmal wielding a sword.

"I believe the police have their own actions based on reports or they make their own reports. I don't want to interfere with the police's jurisdiction.

"I believe they (police) have their own expertise and know what they are doing.

"What's important is for the media to help reinforce the king's advice and decree that this issue should not be prolonged. That's what's crucial," he said.

Yesterday, His Majesty, Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia decreed that immediate action should be taken against those attempting to incite the people, especially regarding the KK Mart issue, which had resulted in several outlets being attacked with petrol bombs.

Saifuddin also said that in yesterday's meeting, the Cabinet had directed the Home Ministry to monitor trends related to incitement and the organising of violence and extreme actions that could jeopardise public order and safety.

He acknowledged the existence of groups trying to raise issues to cause extreme incitement and subsequently provoke violent actions.

"All of this requires the security forces (police) to take action. So, that was what we discussed yesterday at the Cabinet meeting," he said.

However, when asked if the Umno youth chief was identified as among the inciters, he declined to comment.

"I didn't mention (confirming whether Akmal is included among the inciters). You are putting the word into my mouth. It's not fair for me," he said.

Yesterday, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Razarudin Husain was reported as saying that no probe had been initiated against Akmal over the sword posting as no reports had been lodged against the Merlimau assemblyman.

Akmal had been at the forefront of calls for a boycott against KK Mart over the "Allah" socks controversy.
