Close call in Gerik: Elephants trample Axia that struck baby elephant

GERIK: A family had a close call when their car was trampled on by a group of elephants at KM55 of the East-West Road (JRTB) from Gerik to Jeli, just before Titiwangsa Rest Area towards Jeli, last night.

Gerik District Police Chief, Superintendent Zulkifli Mahmood, said the incident around 7.35pm last night, however, did not result in any fatalities or injuries to the driver and two passengers of the Perodua Axia involved.

He said the investigation found that the Perodua Axia, which was traveling from Penang towards Jertih, Terengganu, was trampled by the elephant group after the car, driven by a 48-year-old man, hit a baby elephant.

"When they reached the accident site, which curved to the left, suddenly the driver of the Perodua Axia saw a group of six elephants in the lane towards Jeli, and then the car hit a baby elephant.

"After that, the elephant group approached and stepped on the car, but after the baby elephant got up, the elephant group then dispersed.

The weather at the time of the incident was drizzly and misty," he said in a statement today.

He further stated that as a result of the incident, the car suffered severe damage to the left, front, and rear parts, but the driver and two passengers of the car, who were family members aged 23 and 47, did not suffer any injuries.
