Op Selamat: 35 deaths reported on the first day of Raya

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have recorded 35 deaths due to road accidents around the country during the first day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri yesterday, the third day of the police' Op Selamat.

Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, in a statement on its Facebook page today, said a total of 1,298 road accidents were reported on the same day.

It was previously reported that Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain reminded holidaygoers to be vigilant and exercise patience during their travels back to their respective hometowns.

He advised road users planning to go back to their village, or go on vacation, to adopt these qualities when driving, for the safety and sake of their loved ones, to ensure that they reach their destinations safely.

Op Selamat, which started on Monday, is the police's nationwide road safety campaign for the Hari Raya festivities.

Police are focusing on curbing six key offences including driving over the speed limit, running red lights, the use of mobile phones while driving, and misusing the emergency lane under this series of Op Selamat.
