Tok Mat calls for safety audit after fire at PD toxic waste disposal centre

KUALA LUMPUR: Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has called for safety audits by government agencies following a fire at waste management centre Cenviro Sdn Bhd (Pusat Kualiti Alam) in Port Dickson yesterday.

Mohamad, who is Rembau member of parliament and Rantau assemblyman, said: "The fire at Pusat Kualiti Alam, a toxic waste disposal centre, in Bukit Pelanduk, Port Dickson, yesterday is worrying.

"The centre is near the Kampung Sendayan residential area. Any pollution, leakage or fire at the centre will pose a threat to the residents.

"I hope that the company (Cenviro) examines its standard operating procedures and that government agencies conduct safety audits. This is the second fire to occur," he said on Facebook.

Yesterday, a fire damaged a 6,500- square-metre storage facility for scheduled chemical waste at Cenviro.

The state Fire and Rescue Department said following an emergency call about a fire on the Cenviro premises at 5.58pm, four fire stations with 66 firemen responded to the incident.

It was brought under control at 8.20pm.

In 2019, a 1,900-square-metre open storage area at the same facility caught fire.
