Gunung Ruang volcano eruption: Flights remain suspended to and fro West-East Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: Flights remain suspended between West and East Malaysia this morning following a volcanic eruption in Indonesia on Wednesday.

Malaysia Airlines today cancelled several flights between Kuala Lumpur and Sabah.

In a statement today, the airline said that despite efforts to restore operations as quickly as possible, several scheduled flights for today were cancelled after considering the weather and operational safety.

Earlier, the airline announced that it had gradually resumed flights to and from Sabah, Sarawak, and the Federal Territory of Labuan since yesterday evening.

The list of cancelled flights today involves flights MH2610 (KUL-BKI), MH2611 (BKI-KUL), MH2612 (KUL-BKI), MH2621 (BKI-KUL), MH2646 (KUL-BKI), MH2641 (BKI-KUL).

Also affected are flights to and from Tawau MH2660 (KUL-TWU), MH2661 (TWU-KUL), and Sandakan MH2710 (KUL-SDK), MH2711 (SDK-KUL).

Malaysia Airlines passengers are advised to update their details on the website to receive timely updates from time to time via email and SMS.

"All other flights today remain as scheduled. Updates will be provided on the Malaysia Airlines website periodically and directly notified to affected customers if there are any changes to their flights," it said.

AirAsia also announced that it has cancelled flights between Sandakan, Kota Kinabalu, and Tawau from 6am to 1pm today.

Batik Air was operating this morning but only within a limited time window.

Yesterday, around 20,000 passengers entering and leaving the state at Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA), Labuan, Tawau, and Sandakan were affected by the cancellations.

Most flights to Sabah were affected following the eruption of Mount Ruang volcano in the Sulawesi Islands, Indonesia.

Thick ash from the volcano's eruption is feared to affect the surrounding airspace including in Sabah, forcing airlines to take temporary flight cancellation measures.

Based on information uploaded by both airlines, at least 27 flights in Sabah and eight flights in Sarawak were cancelled since yesterday morning and rescheduled.
