Revamp of Sarikei's farmers market set for completion in September 2024

SARIKEI: The anticipated upgrade of the Sarikei farmers market is expected to be completed by September, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.

Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii, announced that the project, which spans 34 weeks, is projected to be finalised by the end of September with an estimated cost of RM900,000, fully funded and executed by the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA).

Expressing gratitude, Huang acknowledged FAMA's efforts in realising the longstanding request to provide a better trading environment for vendors.

"The upgrade of the market facilities will hopefully benefit and enhance the comfort of the stallholders, small entrepreneurs, and weekend market traders.

"Many of them hail not only from Sarikei but also from nearby areas such as Pakan, Meradong, and Kabong," he said during a recent visit to the project site.

Meanwhile, the Sarikei District Council has urged the market vendors and traders to take note of the ongoing project and to allow space for the upgrade works to proceed.

The council anticipates cooperation from the traders to conduct their business at designated locations and spaces until the project's completion.
