Betong hosts 18th free cataract screening and surgery camp

BETONG: Betong recently saw the successful completion of its 18th Cataract and Pterygium Screening and Surgery Programme at the Betong Hospital, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.

This initiative provided critical eye care services, including free cataract surgeries, to the local community.

A total of 57 individuals underwent cataract screening, out of which 36 patients received successful cataract surgeries, marking another milestone in the programme's ongoing effort to restore vision to those in need.

The event was graced by Betong Member of Parliament Dr Richard Rapu, representing Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

The programme, a brainchild of Uggah, has been running since 2013. It is supported by the Lions Club Kuching Metro and the Health Ministry.

Rapu highlighted Uggah's continuous commitment to funding the programme, covering the costs of intraocular lenses for the surgeries.

This initiative aims to alleviate the burden of cataract surgery costs for patients, especially benefiting the B40 group who might not afford treatment in private clinics or the expense of purchasing lenses.

Since its inception, the programme has benefitted over 900 patients, offering them a chance to regain their vision at no cost.
