Sukma to see competitors in 488 sporting events

KUCHING: The 21st edition of the Sukma, which Sarawak will host from Aug 17 to Aug 24, will have 488 events in 37 sports.

The Malaysia Games Supreme Council, at its meeting in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, stated 236 of the events were for males, 217 for females and 35 were mixed events or open.

The meeting was chaired by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh.

The National Sports Council stated that the events had met the minimum requirement of having athletes from six states.

This year's Sukma will be held in nine of Sarawak's 12 administrative divisions.

They include Kuching with 25 types of sports, Miri with six, Sibu, Mukah, and Bintulu with three sports each and one each in Serian, Sri Aman, and Betong.

The athletes from 15 participating contingents will be housed in five main sports villages — Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unmas) campus in Kota Samarahan, Laila Taib College in Sibu, UiTM Mukah campus, UPM Bintulu campus, and the Institut Kemahiran Belia Negara (IKBN) campus in Miri.

Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Abang Openg will launch the 100-day countdown to the games on May 9.
