Police arrest two more officers in RM1.25 mln extortion case

KUALA LUMPUR: Two more police officers, including an assistant superintendent (ASP), have been arrested following a case of extortion amounting to RM1.25 million involving individuals investigated in connection with cryptocurrency.

In addition to the ASP, another person, involving a sergeant-ranked officer was also arrested, which brings the total number of arrests to five, including an assistant commissioner of Police (ACP), in connection with the case so far.

Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, when contacted, confirmed the latest arrests for investigation under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

He said that a four-day remand order has also been obtained for three senior police officers who were previously arrested, all of whom were serving in a unit within the Commercial Crime Investigation Department at Bukit Aman.

"The arrests involving officers from the JSJK have been remanded for four days starting from today until Tuesday," he said.

Earlier, three senior officers ranked as ACP, superintendent and inspector, aged between 38 and 50, were reported to have been arrested around Jalan Tun Razak here following the extortion case.

Razarudin confirmed that initial investigations found all suspects denying involvement in the case being investigated.

The investigation into the case is being conducted by the Elite Crime Investigation Unit (USJT) of the Law/Prosecution Division (D5) of the Criminal Investigation Department (JSJ) at Bukit Aman under Section 384 of the Penal Code.
