#NSTviral: Tow truck driver summoned for additional spotlight, questions logic behind RTD action

KUALA LUMPUR: A tow truck driver who was summoned for having an additional spotlight fixed to the rear of his truck took to social media to explain his actions.

The man was issued a RM300 summons by three Road Transport Department officers, who stopped him for inspection.

Unhappy with the incident, the man made a video to explain himself and the rationale behind his action to fix an additional spotlight to his truck.

In the video which has since gone viral and viewed over 322,000 times on Facebook, the man says the light is meant to help towing workers as well as other road users to notice the truck better whenever they are in the midst of towing any vehicles.

"We (tow truck drivers) dont work in the toilet or in the room (where it is normally well lit), our work is always on the road and highways which are most often dark or poorly lit.

"Having the spotlight at the rear of the truck while we are at work, helps other road users to notice and accordingly avoid colliding with our truck at an accident scene.

"I did my best to explain to the officers but one of them, the one with three stars rank, still insisted on issuing me a summons for it," he is heard saying in the video.

The man then goes on to say, he has no problem paying the fine and removing the spotlight but if in future any accident were to occur while the truckers were busy towing any vehicle, he hopes the authorities will not blame them.

"I may not be highly educated but I have common sense and know how to value one's life, so that it would not be lost over simple negligence," he said in the viral video which also received more than 100,000 reactions on Facebook.

The video which was posted on Nov 30 by a Roger To has also received comments urging the driver not to pay the summons, instead bring the matter to court .

One Norazlan Abdul Aziz said: " Don't pay bro, fight in court .. I don't even do towing work, I know what the spotlight is for".

Dahalan Hashim said : Your explanation is the best...spoken in gentle language.. hope they understand".

Another user Ha Fiz said : "Good explanation, fight in court!"
