#NSTviral: Netizens fume over viral photo of kopitiam charging RM2 for diners who do not order anything

KUALA LUMPUR: Penang, regarded by locals and tourists alike as a food haven, has many famous restaurants with many outlets going viral for their scrumptious dishes.

This time, however, a kopitiam in Penang has gone viral for the wrong reasons.

This kopitiam allegedly has a sign on its wall which reads: "Each table will be charged RM2 if no single drink ordered."

The picture was posted on the Puchong News Group, describing the act as "outrageous."

"It's really outrageous to charge RM2.

"It's like charging RM5 to people who go to shopping malls and don't buy anything," the caption read.

A netizen shared a similar experience during his travels to Macau, China.

"I've experienced the same thing when I was in Macau, I had to pay RM10 for not ordering (at a restaurant)," Lee Catherine said.

Wai Theng Thong, however said he would not patronise such a premise for charging its customers in that way.

"I would not go to this shop to eat,"he said.

Another person questioned if any legal action could be taken against a person who refuses to pay.

"I'm curious, if I don't pay that RM2, will I receive a lawyer's letter?" asked Jack Daddee.
