#NSTviral: Volunteer students bring free dental care to homeless in Chow Kit [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: Ramadan is a month synonymous with acts of charity and goodwill.

A group of students from Universiti Malaya have embarked on a heartfelt initiative by volunteering in a project called Dentistry for The Needy, to offer free dental treatment to the homeless community.

In a TikTok video shared by @tomato_012, the students are seen dedicating their time and skills to address the oral health needs of homeless individuals in Chow Kit.

The video showcases various dental instruments, including scalers, drills, mouthwash, syringes, and gauze, being used for treatments right on the street.

"My friends and I are volunteering in a project called Dentistry for the Needy, where dentists, specialists, and volunteers unite to provide free dental treatments to the homeless and indigenous people.

Dentistry for The Needy (DFTN) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to provide free dental treatment and dental education to the needy.

This includes the homeless, orang asal, refugees and orphans.

Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia pre-clinical and clinical years students have also been actively volunteering in DFTN programmes for the homeless in Chow Kit and Rohingya refugees in Selayang.

These activities allow students to apply their classroom knowledge while gaining hands-on experience in community service.

"The programme is funded through donations to purchase instruments and materials for treatments," said the 23-year-old student in the video.

In addition to providing treatments such as scaling, fillings, dental check-ups, and extractions, specialists are also on hand to create dentures for patients.

Aside from treatment, the video captures volunteers distributing packed food to those in need.

Netizens have praised their selfless act of volunteering to assist those in need while praying for blessings for their noble efforts.

A TikTok user, Halliwell9090, commented: "It is wonderful. May Allah reward all of you abundantly, God willing. Amin.

Another user, @Mekta74, said: "Praise be to Allah for your great work in helping the homeless. May Allah bless you all."

@Maiisded said: "Amazing work! May you all be blessed for your efforts."
