EC to wait for official notice on Pujut rep's disqualification before taking action

KUCHING: The Election Commission (EC) is waiting for the official notice from the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly on the status of Pujut assemblyman, Dr Ting Tiong Choon.

Earlier today, the State Legislative Assembly had decided to disqualify Ting following allegations of dual citizenship and that he had been declared bankrupt, twice.

EC chairman, Datuk Seri Hashim Abdullah, said the commission could only decide on the next course of action after they have received the official notice.

“The EC only learned about the disqualification of the Pujut assemblyman as a member in the Sarawak state assembly from media reports.

“We are still waiting for an official notification from Sarawak Legislative Assembly speaker (Datuk Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar) on the status of the Pujut assemblyman.

“The commission will then decide on the next course of action,” said Hashim in a statement today.

The August House here today came to the decision after 70 assemblymen voted in favour of a ministerial motion made against Ting over his alleged dual citizenship and claims of bankruptcy in Australia in 2012.

Only 10 assemblymen voted against the motion, which was tabled by State International Trade and E-Commerce Minister, Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh.

Ting was disqualified as a member of the Dewan Undangan Negeri Sarawak under Article 17(1)(g) of the State Constitution of Sarawak.
