Pakatan Harapan's decision to cut off Pas will strengthen election machinery

JOHOR BARU: The decision by the Pakatan Harapan presidential council to not cooperate with Pas in the 14th General Election (GE14) will dispel any lingering uncertainty surrounding the opposition pact's relationship with the Islamist party.

Johor Parti Amanah Negara (PAN) vice chairman Suhaizan Kaiat said the decision had to be made to strengthen Pakatan Harapan's machinery ahead of the GE14.

"Now that the decision has been made, Pakatan Harapan can move forward without worrying about uncertainties that had plagued us before this.

"This is unlike before, when there were some unclear issues with the pact's relationship with Pas. It was a blur back then, but now it is clearer," Suhaizan told the New Straits Times.

He said Pas committed the “ultimate betrayal” when it was seen to be on friendly terms with Umno.

Suhaizan said PAN, which is part of the opposition pact together with DAP, PKR and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM), has benefited from Pakatan Harapan's structure and machinery.

"I have experienced political movement in the opposition since the days of Barisan Alternatif and Pakatan Rakyat in the past. I can attest that the opposition front is better now in terms of structure as our machinery runs right up to the division level," said Suhaizan.

GE14 is likely to see three cornered fights following Pakatan Harapan’s decision to no longer have a political cooperation with Pas in the polls.

The outcome came after a three-hour-long involving the pact’s presidential council in Kuala Lumpur last night.
