DAP-led government in denial of Federal help on flood victims

GEORGE TOWN: The DAP-led Penang government in a state of denial, State opposition leader Datuk Jahara Hamid said.

The Teluk Ayer Tawar assemblyman slammed the state government for ignoring the fact that the Federal government has been assisting victims since the major floods struck on Nov 4.

"A number of trailer lorries came in for the past week, supplying food, clothings and even mattresses.

"This is their (Penang government) politics...they are in denial about all the assistance given to the people by the Barisan Nasional led federal government.

"We may not be perfect but we did supply aid to the victims," she told newsmen at the sideline of the state legislative assembly sitting here.

A 17-hour storm on Nov 4 paralysed the state, triggering a mega flood, landslides and uprooted trees.

More than 13,000 people were displaced while seven casualties were reported.

Earlier, the Penang government cried foul over the lack of aid given to the flood victims by the Federal government to-date.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said that the state had requested for fundings for flood mitigation projects worth RM1 billion from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak during his visit last week.

Until today, however, Lim said Najib had neither made any announcement on the request made nor contributed aid directly to the flood victims.

"After his visit, there were no aid given to the flood victims, whether in terms of the flood mitigation projects or direct assistance to the victims.

"Penang has allocated RM100 million through the 'Pulau Pinang Bangkit' programme, and we hope the Federal government can allocated a bigger aid than that," he said.

Lim's statement on the lack of aid directly given to flood victims, however, contradicted with the actual situation where Kelab Putera 1Malaysia came with 60 lorry-load of aid and helped affected flood victims to clean their houses since last Tuesday.

The team, led by its president Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim, distributed mattresses, pillows, cookwares, food and hygiene kits, among others, to the victims, on the instruction of Najib.
