Zahid defends RoS and denies any interference

KUALA LUMPUR: Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi dismissed claims he has a hand in the application made by Pakatan Harapan to register with the Registrar of Societies (RoS).

He said, although RoS falls under the purview of the Home Ministry, the agency has so far been professional in resolving the issues surrounding the registration of Pakatan Harapan as an opposition coalition.

"The Home Ministry is open to meet (with Pakatan Harapan) and from today's meeting, I feel that RoS has been very professional since this is an operational issue.

"Although RoS is under the Home Ministry, I never had a hand in this and whether or not they (RoS) are going to approve Pakatan Harapan's application," he said at the Parliament here.

Allegations of Zahid being involved in the issue made its round on social media recently, saying that he had purposely delayed the pact's registration filed with the RoS on July 24.

Earlier, the pact Chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad met with Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Alwi Ibrahim and RoS director-general Surayati Ibrahim to discuss the matter.

Zahid said the reason behind the delay is due to problems faced by the component parties.

The issues, he said, are concerning Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia's (PPBM) failure to hold an annual general meeting (AGM) while DAP has yet to submit the final report of its Central Executive Committee (CEC) re-election to the RoS.

"At the moment, the application could not be approved due to problems that they (Pakatan Harapan) themselves have yet to resolve.

"Also RoS is of the opinion that the DAP's CEC re-election is one of the reason why Pakatan Harapan's application can't be finalised and DAP has yet to submit its re-election report.

"Due to that, RoS haven't received the full list of DAP's new CEC. Apart from that, PPBM's application to amend its party constitution has also not been approved yet," he added.

Alwi, who was also present during the media conference stressed that all parties must adhere to the rules set by RoS as well as their respective party's constitution.

"As mentioned, those two matters must be resolved immediately so that the RoS can take further actions according to the registration process," he said.

Last Friday, Surayati said the RoS does not recognise PPBM's extraordinary general meeting (EGM) held on Nov 2 last year as only 12 of its supreme council members attended the meeting.

Surayati also said that PPBM cannot use the term "Armada" to refer to its youth wing as it is not stated in the party's constitution.

Recently, Dr Mahathir admitted that the reason PPBM could not hold an AGM was due to the party's poor organisational structure as its divisions and branches have failed to hold meetings at their respective levels although the party was officially registered in Sept last year.

DAP on the other hand held its CEC re-election recently, following a directive for fresh elections to be held. This was due to RoS on July 7 saying that the DAP's earlier CEC re-election on Sept 29, 2013 was not in accordance with the law.

Its secretary-general Lim Guan Eng on Saturday said DAP is still waiting for the official report from external auditor Grant Thornton on the re-election in order for them to be able to submit it to the RoS
