Umno general assembly to go 'green'

KUALA LUMPUR: The upcoming Umno general assembly next week will largely be paperless for the first time ever.

Secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said up to 70 per cent of the documentation for the assembly would posted online for the delegates peruse.

He said printed documents would only be provided to party’s supreme council members and divisional heads and secretaries.

"We are stepping into the digital era and and being more environmentally- friendly by using less paper," he said at a press conference here today.

Tengku Adnan said due to certain rules under the Registrar of Societies (RoS), the party was required to print certain documents as required by law.

"RoS requires us to submit certain documents and that is why we can only go 70 per cent paperless for now.”

Under the paperless move, he said delegates would not be issued with printed statement of party matters.

He said information and related statements would be available on Umno's website where everyone could view and download.

"We will also communicate with the media through online... if there is any press conference, we will inform you digitally.

"We hope this will be successful and for next year, we will discuss with RoS if we can go completely green (paperless)," he said.

Tengku Adnan said 1,795 pressmen from local and international organisations had registered to cover the assembly.

He said preparations for the event were more than 90 per cent compelete and the organisers were now finalising security issues to ensure the assembly ran smoothly.

He said delegates would be given radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags to ensure a smooth process throughout the proceedings.

He said the delegates would no longer need to queue to enter the assembly hall for security checks but by merely waving their tags for doors to open.

Meanwhile, Tengku Adnan also said shuttle buses would be provided from the assembly venue at Putra World Trade Centre to Dataran Merdeka for those interested to visit the Expo Negaraku.
