Umno Youth leader baffled by Tun Mahathir's 'free speech' vow

PORT DICKSON: Teluk Kemang Umno Youth chief Mohd Najib Isa has described Tun Dr Mahathir Muhamad’s promise to ensure freedom of speech in the country as unwarranted.

“I am not sure what kind of ‘freedom of speech’ Dr Mahathir is referring to.

“I think people in the country have been enjoying such a freedom, as they are free to express their thoughts and opinions on various social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

“If there is no freedom of speech under the current government, I don’t think the public would be able to (express themselves on social media),” he said.

Najib said Dr Mahathir should not make such a baffling promise simply to win the people’s hearts, as freedom of speech is allowed under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

“I don’t know what kind of ‘freedom of speech’ the rakyat needs. I don’t see anything wrong with the current system,” he said.

Dr Mahathir, who is also Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) chairman, had reportedly promised that his party would ensure that the people would enjoy “freedom of speech” if Pakatan Harapan, of which PPBM is a member, were voted into power.
