MCA's Wee to contest Tanjung Piai for third term

PONTIAN: MCA has proposed incumbent Datuk Seri Wee Jeck Seng as the Barisan Nasional candidate for the Tanjung Piai parliamentary seat in the upcoming 14th General Election.

The announcement was made by MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai after the launching of the Tanjung Piai MCA election war room here.

Liow said MCA is announcing its candidates early so that efforts to introduce them to the voters can begin early.

"In Tanjung Piai, Wee has worked hard and shown a strong commitment to serve the people. That is why we are putting his name to contest the seat again," said Liow.

It will be a third time outing for Wee, a former Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, after winning the seat for the first time in the 2008 general election.

At the same time, Liow also announced Tanjung Piai MCA vice chairman Tan Eng Meng as the candidate for the Pekan Nanas state seat.

"We have a strong team in Tanjung Piai and I am confident that the voters will continue to support BN because we had brought a lot of development and progress to Tanjung Piai and Johor in general," said Liow.

In the last general election, Wee defeated DAP's Mahdzir Ibrahim with a majority of 5,457 votes while for the Pekan Nanas seat, Yeo Tung Siong of DAP beat BN's Wong You Fong with a majority of 2,669 votes.

Liow also criticised the opposition for not doing anything for the people in Tanjung Piai and for only playing up issues to divide the people.

"They have not been serving the people and now, they will look to switch the candidates. That is the usual tactic of the opposition.

“I don't think DAP would be contesting the seat again because they don't have any answer when the people ask them what their contributions are. They would only run to other seats or change the candidates, " said Liow.
