The opposition coalition is not as solid as Barisan Nasional

KUALA LUMPUR: The opposition coalition is not as consolidated as Barisan Nasional (BN), said political experts.

Political analyst, Professor Datuk Dr Shamsul Amri Baharuddin said since the 1990 election, the opposition is still in the process of firming up its alliance.

“That means, it is not as consolidated like BN. Until today they are still looking for a platform of integration that is long-term.

“For now, they are just happy cohabiting for the sake of the election but not really ready to get married,” he told the New Straits Times Press (NSTP).

Shamsul said the opposition’s failure to have one common goal was too obvious for everyone to see.

“It is their pragmatism that we fail to notice… the end justifies the mean.

“For a moment they are friends with DAP and PAS and after that, they are not. So easy. Why? Because Amanah is better as there is no Islamic baggage.

And Amanah is so new and tiny. What choice does it has? The party only consists of six people.

“It’s a mistake to give the different parties equal weight in terms of power and influence,” he added.

Meanwhile, Parti Cinta Malaysia deputy-president Datuk Huan Cheng Guan said the opposition coalition obviously want to safeguard their own self interest instead of protecting the interests of the people.

“DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang just want to protect his son from going to jail, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad wants to keep his children safe and lastly for PKR they want to defend their family members and cronies.

“These people are clearly not fighting for the people, it is all for themselves. We can see from the disagreement they had during seat allocations and even among their candidates that they do not see eye to eye,” he said.

DAP veteran Dr Tan Seng Giaw warned voters to vote wisely and do not vote for those who use profane languages.

“Voters, please do not accept those who like to use foul languages, no matter who are they, this shows that they are not capable to lead the country,” he told NSTP.

Dr Tan also believes that every party had their own agenda including the opposition.

“The utmost priority for all the parties is to serve the people and preserve the harmony in the country,” he said.
