Pakatan Harapan may take more than 100 days to fulfil promises - Batu Gajah MP

IPOH: Pakatan Harapan’s pledge to fulfil its election promises within 100 days may be delayed due to the burgeoning national debt left behind by the previous government.

Batu Gajah member of parliament V. Sivakumar said while the new government was committed to fulfilling its promises to the people, it also needed to focus on managing the country and resolving various national issues.

He also said the people needed to be realistic about Pakatan Harapan’s manifesto as the country’s federal government debt had reached RM1 trillion.

“The government needs to be careful and is collecting financial statements first. From there, whatever government policies can be implemented. That is more important right now,” he told reporters after visiting Pasar Awam Jelapang here today.

Sivakumar said the people placed high hopes in Pakatan Harapan to run the country better than the previous government, and that it was the new government’s responsibility to fulfil its election pledges.

“I think there may be a slight delay in fulfilling these promises because of the country’s financial situation. The promises were made before we found out about the real (debt) figure.

“However, I am confident the new government under Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s leadership will try its best to fulfil Pakatan Harapan’s manifesto.

“The wastages and misappropriation that happened before means that the PH government must exercise prudent spending to ensure all promises can be fulfilled,” he said.
