DAP to field former broadcast journo for Balakong by-election?

KUALA LUMPUR: The Balakong by-election, scheduled on Sept 8, could see DAP fielding broadcast journalist Tan Yunn Chzuan, popularly known as Yunna Tan, as their candidate.

Sources told the New Straits Times that Tan, who has been with Astro AEC for the past nine years, had handed in her resignation last week as she aims to focus her attention on the upcoming by-election.

It is learnt that Tan was approached by DAP stalwart Tony Pua, who is the party’s publicity secretary.

Tan, who has no experience in politics, was said to have been selected as DAP’s candidate due to her clean image. She is also not affiliated to any other political parties.

It is understood that the 33-year-old is from Penang and attempts to get her comments have proved futile.

The Balakong seat fell vacant following the death of its assemblyman Eddie Ng Tien Chee in an accident at Km11.7 of the Grand Saga Highway on July 20.

In GE14, Ng retained his Balakong seat for the second term after defeating Lim Chin Wah from Barisan Nasional (BN) and Mohamad Ibrahim Ghazali (PAS) with a 35,538-vote majority.

On Monday, the Election Commission (EC) set nomination day for Balakong by-election on Aug 18, and polling day on Sept 8.
