Muhyiddin: We will not bring back ISA

PUTRAJAYA: There is no need to reinstate the Internal Security Act (ISA), says Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Muhyiddin, who is also the home minister, said the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government had no plans to bring back the Act, which was abolished in 2012.

“This is because we have the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma), the Prevention of Terrorism Act 2015 (Pota) and the Prevention of Crime Act 1959 (Poca) to take care of the country’s security,” he said in his winding-up speech at the second PPBM general assembly today.

He said Sosma, Pota and Poca were maintained by the government based on suggestions made by a committee that had studied the laws.

“The laws were maintained after a few amendments were made.

“We did that because we do not want any irresponsible parties to take advantage of the laws, be it militants or gangsters that threaten the people and the country,” he said.
