EC to meet on Friday over Semenyih by-election

PUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission (EC) will hold a meeting on Friday regarding the Semenyih by-election.

Its secretary Datuk Mohamed Elias Abu Bakar said the EC received the official notification from the Selangor State Assembly Speaker Ng Suee Lim on Monday over the vacancy of the Semenyih state seat following the death of its incumbent Bakhtiar Mohd Nor on Jan 11.

Elias said the meeting would be chaired by EC chairman Azhar Azizan Harun at the EC headquarters here at 8.30am.

Key dates for the Semenyih by-election would be deliberated in the meeting including dates for nomination, earling voting, polling day and the electoral roll that would be used as well as other matters concerning the by-election, he added.

“A press conference will be held after the special meeting,” he said in a statement today.

Last Friday, Bakhtiar, 57, had an heart attack and was rushed to the Kajang Hospital. He died at 4.45am.

In the last general election, Bakhtiar from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) garnered 23,428 votes to win the Semenyih seat beating candidates from Barisan Nasional, Pas and Parti Sosialis Malaysia. He won with a majority of 8,964 votes.

The late Semenyih state assemblyman was also the Hulu Langat Bersatu division chief.
