Rantau independent candidate an Amanah member, faces expulsion

SEREMBAN: Mohd Nor Yassin may see his Amanah party membership revoked for contesting as an independent candidate in the Rantau by-election.

This was revealed by Amanah secretary-general Mohd Anuar Mohd Tahir, who confirmed that Mohd Nor had recently joined the party.

"I have taken note of reports about the independent candidate Mohd Nor, where there is confusion surrounding the status of his political membership.

"Based on the membership registry, he is indeed a member of Amanah who recently joined the party," he said in a statement today.

He said based on Amanah's constitution, the party's management committee will recommend the termination of Mohd Nor's membership for contesting without the party's permission.

Mohd Anuar also instructed all Amanah members and supporters in Rantau to throw their support behind PKR's Dr S. Streram, who is representing Pakatan Harapan.

The Rantau by-election is a four-cornered fight involving BN's Mohamad hasan, Dr S. Streram, and independent candidates Malar Rajaram and Mohd Nor.

Speaking to reporters earlier today, Mohd Nor Yassin, 67, is confident that he can win the Rantau state seat.

The former lecturer at Raja Melewar Teacher's Training Institute said he would fully utilise the opportunity to contest in the by-election.

"Obviously, every contestant aims to win. But the most important thing is for us to celebrate and utilise the democracy system of our country," he said.

He added that he plans to bring more Islamic-based developments in Rantau if he wins in the by-election.

Polling day for the by-election has been set for April 13, with early voting being held four days earlier.

The by-election was called after the Federal Court dismissed an appeal filed by Mohamad to set aside an Election Court decision to declare his victory in the 14th general election (GE14) null and void.

Mohamad had won the seat uncontested in May 2018 after Dr Streram was unable to submit his nomination papers after being denied entry into the nomination centre for not having a pass issued by the EC.

The seat has 20,926 registered voters, including 118 early voters and four absentee voters.
