Bersatu should hold election as soon as possible, says Dr Mahathir

PUTRAJAYA: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malayaisa (Bersatu) chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is of the opinion the party's election should be held as soon as possible since its current administration comprised leaders who have been appointed.

Dr Mahathir, who is also the prime minister, said changes should be made to expand the party.

“We feel that it is paramount for us to hold the party election as early as possible. The current party administration is based on leaders who have been appointed, (and) sometimes (without changes) the party cannot expand successfully,” he told reporters after the launch of the 2030 Rural Development Policy here.

Dr Mahathir was responding to a question on whether Bersatu would proceed to hold its extraordinary general meeting as scheduled. In reply, the Bersatu chairman said the EGM would not be postponed.

It was reported that Bersatu would hold an EGM on July 20 to make amendments to its party constitution.

Dr Mahathir was reported as saying the amendments were necessary to correct some “shortcomings” and to make the party’s administration run more smoothly.

One of the amendments that would be on the cards is related to fairer representation of its members so that members at the division level will be able to participate, and that the divisions’ composition will be more clearly determined, said Dr Mahathir.
