BN to name candidate for Tanjung Piai by-election a week before nomination

KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional will reveal their candidate for the Tanjung Piai by-election at least a week before nomination day, said Umno secretary-general Tan Sri Annuar Musa.

He said the coalition will come to a decision soon, and has held consultations with BN component party leaders together with Pas, their political ally.

“We will come to a decision soon, a week before nomination at the very least.

“Or we will wait for Pakatan Harapan to announce their candidate before we reveal ours,” he said at Parliament lobby here today.

Annuar said the coalition had conducted a survey to study the sensitivity and voter preferences on who should represent BN at the by-election.

“There were mixed opinions. One was that since MCA didn’t win the seat, Umno should be the one fielding a candidate.

“But there were also people who felt that MCA should be given another chance as they didn’t lose by much.”

The Election Commission had announced nomination day and polling day would be Nov 2 and 16, respectively.

The constituency became vacant after the death of Datuk Dr Md Farid Md Rafik on Sept 21 due to heart complications.
