Anwar: Contents of MACC letter not in dispute

KUALA LUMPUR: The contents of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) letter is not in dispute, despite it being wrongly sent to the Pakatan Harapan component party, says PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said the letter which implicated Bera division chief Zakaria Abdul Hamid’s and party member Ismail Dulhadi‘s alleged involvement in corruption was serious.

“Let the disciplinary board refer to the letter. They (MACC) said they made a mistake but they did not dispute the contents.

“The contents of the letter is serious and as a party we must be firm in combating abuse of power and corruption.

“I will refer this to discuss with the disciplinary board,” said the Port Dickson MP.

On Monday, the MACC said it had erred when it advised that disciplinary action be taken against two PKR members.

Its deputy chief Commissioner (operations), Datuk Seri Azam Baki, said the mistake was made by the MACC reporting branch head through a letter to the party, which suggested disciplinary action against the two members for violating the party’s code of ethics.

The allegations against Zakaria came from an MACC investigation, which was based on a purported audio recording of him offering government contracts during the PKR elections last year.

Anwar said Zakaria could appeal against his sacking.

“Of course, he has every right.

“In the constitution, every member even after being dismissed has every right to appeal and the disciplinary board must consider it fairly.

“But, I think it is important to me now that the letter has surfaced, that the contents of the letter be shown to Zakaria,” he said.

PKR vice-president Zuraida Kamaruddin had accused the party leadership of selective justice and criticised that Zakaria was not given an opportunity to explain himself.

Anwar also said that no other investigation paper was referred to the PKR by MACC or police.

“If there are, we will take action.

“If there is a sentence in court, as in the case of the Ampang PKR Youth chief (Adam Rosly Abdullah) or a letter from the MACC, we will take action.

“If there are others, inform us. Even if she doesn’t attend meetings, she can send a letter and we will scrutinise it,” he said.

On Monday, the Kuala Lumpur High Court sentenced former Ampang PKR Youth chief Adam to a six-month jail term and RM30,000 fine for furnishing false information to the MACC.
