'PKR president, sec-gen can't reverse decision to sack members'

PUTRAJAYA: Neither the PKR president nor the party secretary-general have the power to reverse the decision made by party’s central leadership when it comes to the sacking of party members.

PKR secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said there wasn’t any provision in the party’s constitution that allowed such powers.

“Which provision outlines that the president and the secretary-general can withdraw the decision to sack a member?

“There is no such thing... nothing,” he told a press conference after the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry (KPDNHEP) monthly assembly today.

He was responding to a statement by the party’s disciplinary board chairman, Datuk Ahmad Kassim, who said only president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and secretary-general Saifuddin could decide whether to withdraw or maintain the decision to sack two party members last Saturday.

Bera division chief Zakaria Abdul Hamid, who is also central leadership council member, and party member Ismail Dulhadi were sacked by the party’s policy making body after it found them to be involved in corrupt practices during party elections last September.

PKR had sacked the duo with immediate effect after the disciplinary board received a letter from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) dated Oct 23, 2019, on their misconduct.

Saifuddin who is also the domestic trade and consumer affairs minister said there was no question as to MACC sending the letter, as the ant-graft agency had only erred in terms of procedure not case facts.

“It was a mistake in terms of procedure. In terms of case facts, it had never changed.

“Nothing changes the contents, the complaints and the months of investigation carried out by the commission,” he added.

Saifuddin said the party was in the midst of sending out official letters to the sacked members.

“According to the constitution, anyone sacked from the party can appeal within a certain period. His or her appeal will be evaluated by the appeal panel,” he added.
