PH Presidential Council will discuss power transition date, says Anwar

SERI KEMBANGAN: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is optimistic that the Pakatan Harapan (PH) Presidential Council will discuss the date of the transfer of power from Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to him.

While acknowledging that the power transfer process had been decided by the council earlier, Anwar said the specific date still had to be discussed despite concerns that there were external attempts to challenge the initial decision involving the transfer of power to him.

“There are such views but as was agreed upon, it needs to be discussed between me and the prime minister and by right in the presidential council for the exact date.

“It is well worth to discuss it in a good atmosphere. There is no need to make it impassioned,” he said after attending the UPSR 2016-2019 Tamil School’s Excellence Student Award ceremony organised by OMS Foundation, here, today.

Keadilan Youth had demanded that the PH secretariat set a specific date for the transition.

Dr Mahathir had announced that the power transfer would be implemented after the Asia-Pacific Economic Summit (APEC) 2020 in November.

Anwar also called on all quarters to stop playing up the issue of teaching of Jawi in vernacular schools.

“My advice is to desist and instead hold dialogues.

“The country will be the one which will lose as it involves the quality of education.

“The world is becoming more competitive.

“As such, it is important for us to master knowledge.

“The priority should be to improve the quality of education.”

Anwar stressed on the need for understanding when it came to mastering the national language, without neglecting other languages.

He said such an approach would reduce differences involving language issues.
