Emergency Umno division chiefs meeting called at Menara Dato Onn

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno is having an emergency meeting with its division chiefs at Menara Dato Onn today.

According to an invite seen by the New Straits Times, the meeting was called by party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi with the invitation sent out by its secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.

The invitation stated the meeting is related to a very important matter regarding the future of the party which must be expedited.

At press time, the agenda of the urgent meeting has yet to be confirmed.

However, talks among political players pointed to several possible agendas namely either on Datuk Seri Najib Razak's corruption case at the Federal Court or on the controversial littoral combat ship (LCS) scandal.

Another possible agenda claimed by sources is a plan for some Umno members of parliament to retract their support for the current government to force an early 15th general election (GE15).

In July last year, the Umno supreme council decided for its MPs to retract their support for the then Perikatan Nasional government led by former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

This then led to the collapse of the federal government and paved the way for Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to helm Putrajaya's top post.

For the past several months, Umno leaders have been calling for an early GE15, claiming that holding the national polls this year would allow the party to win big.

However, Ismail Sabri said he would call for GE15 once the country's economy is stable enough for the people to go to the polls.
