MCA wants Zahid to step down as BN chairman

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA is the latest party to call for Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to step down after the humiliating defeat in the 15th General Election (GE15).

Its secretary-general Datuk Chong Sin Woon said the party has lost confidence in Zahid as the coalition chairman and told him to respectfully step down to allow a new leader to decide the direction of BN from here on.

Zahid also reportedly called off the BN supreme council meeting which was scheduled to take place tonight, which shocked and disappointed MCA.

"MCA is of the opinion that no parties have the right to represent BN to negotiate with any political party without the mandate of the coalition's supreme council.

"MCA believes an acting BN chairman must call for a supreme council meeting immediately," he said in a statement today.

Pressure is mounting on Zahid as many quarters from Umno and BN have been calling for him to take responsibility and step down from his position after the defeat.

BN only won 30 seats out of the 177 seats it contested.
