Umno leaders keep mum on today's supreme council meeting

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno leaders were tight lipped when asked if there was any controversial issues discussed during the party's special supreme council meeting tonight.

The meeting, which was held during the on-going 2022 Umno General Assembly, lasted for about an hour at the party's headquarters at the Menara Dato' Onn of the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre here.

Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi described the special supreme council meeting as run-of-the-mill ahead of tomorrow's assembly.

"The party's permanent chairman briefed the Umno Supreme Council on preparations made for tomorrow's assembly," Zahid told reporters.

Asked if the party discussed its preparation to face the state election in six states, Zahid said it would be deliberated in the next supreme council meeting.

Zahid also declined to comment if the party had discussed and made any decision including to suspend its members of parliament who signed the statutory declarations to support Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin after the 15th General Election (GE15).

Instead, he said in jest to the reporter who raised the question: "I want to sack you."

Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin echoed what Zahid had said, saying the meeting only discussed on preparation for tomorrow's session of the party general assembly.

He also confirmed the Umno Supreme Council did not discuss on the proposal for the top two positions in the party to remain uncontested.

"No, the matter was not discussed during the meeting," he said.

Last night, 140 Umno division chiefs expressed solidarity for the president's position, currently held by Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, not to be contested in the Umno elections expected to be held in May.

Wangsa Maju Umno division chief Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Shafie Abdullah, who represented the group, said the division heads also agreed that the deputy president's position should not be contested.

He said Umno's current focus should be on strengthening the party to face the six state elections expected to be held this year.

Also throwing support to the proposal was Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad, who during the launch of the Wanita Umno delegates' conference this morning, said such a proposal would give room for top leaders to strengthen the party.
