Pas yet to receive invitation to join unity govt

SHAH ALAM: A Pas top leader today confirmed that the Islamist party has yet to receive any invitation to join the unity government.

Its secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said this in response to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's statement that the latter was ready to consider making the Islamist party a partner in the unity government.

"As of now, the prime minister had extended the offer openly (during an interview) with Times Magazine.

"As for Pas, we have yet to receive anything," Kota Baru member of parliament told reporters when visiting the media centre set-up in conjunction with Pas' 69th Muktamar (General Assembly) at the Ideal Convention Centre (IDCC) here today.

On a related matter, Takiyuddin defended the statement by Pas deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man last night (Wednesday) that the party was confident of returning and helming the federal administration.

"According to the laws of the country, the federal government can be changed anytime as long as it complies with the requirements as outlined in the Federal Constitution.

"Whoever is of the view of Yang di-Pertuan Agong commands majority support from members of the Dewan Rakyat, then he should be appointed as the prime minister.

"This was what happened sometime in 2020 and 2021. At the time, there was a change in the federal administration after the then prime ministers lost the majority support in the Dewan Rakyat," he said.

Asked if Pas would put forth a motion of no confidence against the prime minister in the Dewan Rakyat, Takiyuddin responded: "Not necessary.

"Tabling a motion of no confidence may be one of the ways. However, there are other ways too," he said.

Regarding speculation about political parties potentially switching allegiance to join Perikatan Nasional (PN) en-bloc, Takiyuddin declined to comment, stating: "It is up to you to investigate."
