Amanah must work hard to dismiss narrative Islam is under threat under unity government

KLANG: Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) must intensify efforts to counter baseless allegations that the position of Islam and the Malays are under threat under the administration of the unity government, its president Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said.

Although he alleged that such a feat is a tall order, Mohamad, nevertheless, stressed the importance of dismissing such a narrative in order to restore confidence among the Malays before parties aligned in the unity government face the next general election.

Mohamad, who is also the Agriculture and Food Security Minister, likened the narrative propagated by the opposition as an effort to create a 'phobia' among the Malays towards the parties aligned with the unity government.

"The outcome of the recent general election showed that such a perception (that Islam and the Malays are under threat) has somehow been accepted by the people.

"This was evident when prominent political figures from Amanah, Umno as well as those from PKR such as the party's 'Puteri Reformasi' (Nurul Izzah Anwar) lost during the polls," said Mohamad in his winding-up speech during the 2023 National Amanah Convention here today.

Mohamad dismissed such a narrative as untrue andlikened it to a made-up ghost story to scare away people.

"This is nothing but an attempt to create 'phobia' (to scare away the Malays). It is like a ghost story being made up which is not true.

"Although countering such a narrative is a challenging task, we nevertheless must face it (in order to restore confidence among the Malays towards Amanah and other parties in the unity government)," he said.

Mohamad also reminded all Amanah leaders and members not to use the same 'modus operandi' as the ones adopted by Pas in its efforts to win support from the people.

"If we want to fight Pas effectively, we should avoid from using the same tactics as adopted by the party. We should continue to champion the struggles of Rahmatan lil Alamin that Islam is for all people, irrespective of Muslims and non-Muslims.

"Now, we are in solidarity with our Palestinian brothers and sisters who are being oppressed (by the relentless attack of the Israeli forces).

"Similar to our solidarity for the Palestinians, Amanah must also show the same support to condemn if there are non-Muslims being oppressed," he said.
