Mohamad Sabu admits Amanah's weakness, justifies coalition joining

KLANG: Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) president Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu acknowledged that the party was weak on its own and that is why it joined the coalition.

He said that it was easier to form a party than to maintain its survival.

He cited examples of former prominent Umno figures who exited and formed Semangat 46, but only survived for two elections.

"Will Amanah follow suit (cease to exist)? Never!

"We built the party based on a coalition.

"We know we are not strong (hence) we cling on to our friends, previously with Pakatan Harapan (PH) and now in the unity government with Barisan Nasional (BN) and our friends in Sabah and Sarawak," he said during the Amanah National Convention at Wyndham Acnar Hotel today.

Also present were Transport Minister and DAP secretary general Anthony Loke Siew Fook, Higher Education Minister and Barisan Nasional (BN) secretary-general Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir, Communications Minister and Pakatan Harapan (PH) communications director Fahmi Fadzil, and Selangor Menteri Besar and PKR vice-president Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

Mohamad emphasised that the "one-dominant party system" was no longer relevant.

This was evident when no single party garnered the majority to establish a government in the 15th General Election (GE15).

He said that finding coalition partners who were compatible and had the same goals and objectives was very important.

He also said that forming a coalition based on "marriage of convenience" or "marriage of necessity", would not last and would remain fragile.

"Therefore, the unity government needs to immediately be aware and realise that we are together to save the country from continuing to fall apart.

"We are together because we want to maintain stability in order to spur economic development, make people prosperous, and restore this nations' dignity," he added.
