'I am old, I don't have the money' - Tun M asks for proof that he attempted to bribe the King

KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has called the Prime Minister to provide evidence on the former's alleged attempt to bribe the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to oust the government.

The former prime minister and former Langkawi member of Parliament was commenting on allegations made on social media claiming that he had bribed the King.

"I am old, I don't have money. He (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) said I have billions of ringgit.

"So I ask Anwar to show the (proof of the)money. He said he had a box of reports regarding the money I owned but until now he could not provide it.

"How can I hide the money if I don't even have it in the first place?" he said to media after attending Global Day of Action For Gaza Ceasefire Advocacy organised by OKU Sentral.

Describing the allegation as baseless slander against the opposition, Mahathir said he was often accused of having a lot of money. But nothing has been proven.

Meanwhile, when asked whether the opposition's claim of having sufficient numbers to overthrow the government was merely to conceal their lack of support, he said that every citizen has the right to voice their opinions.

"Now in Malaysia, no one can say anything; this government does not allow discussion about race, country, and religion.

"So, what can we say? We can't even report if the government doesn't like it. This is a dictatorship.

"If they (opposition) say they have the numbers to change the government, let them be. It is their right."
