PKR President's Office Secretariat confident that govt will address issues affecting farmers

KOTA BARU: The issues faced by farmers under the Kemubu Agricultural Development Authority (Kada) are almost similar to those faced by the Kedah Regional Development Authority (Keda).

PKR President's Office Secretariat senior political secretary Datuk Romli Ishak said that among them were poor drainage systems, as well as issues with water supply and padi seeds.

"These are among the critical issues faced by farmers under Kada. Apart from that, they also face problems with the supply and quality of the padi seeds.

"They have been facing this issue for almost 30 years. The government needs to give serious attention to these issues."

He said he would bring the matter to the prime minister.

Speaking to reporters after receiving a memorandum from the Kelantan Farmer's Association, Romli said: "It is the government's aim to get rid of poverty among the farmers. l am confident there will be a solution to these issues soon."

Meanwhile, the association's chairman, Zuha Ismail, said some 7,000 farmers in Kelantan have been plagued by the problems.

"Most are facing problems with their drainage systems, which led to them being unable to channel water to the padi fields smoothly.

"Some are unhappy with the unreasonable price of padi, which is about RM1,400 per tonne."
