Israel must be expelled from the UN

LETTERS: We condemn in the strongest terms the barbaric bombardment of Gaza following the collapse of the truce.

It is clear that Israel ignores pleas to protect civilians. Instead, it has launched hundreds of strikes.

Israel's actions are punishable by international law. The indiscriminate, brutal attacks have all the characteristics of genocide and ethnic cleansing.

With all the evidence of Israel's attacks in Gaza, the West Bank and Jeruselem, a motion should be tabled in the United Nations (UN) to expel the country from the organisation.

Article 6 of the UN Charter reads: "A Member of the United Nations which has persistently violated the Principles contained in the present Charter may be expelled from the Organisation by the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council."

This situation in Gaza is worsening by the day. All indications point to the intensifying of the Israeli assault to empty Gaza of Palestinians.

A UN peacekeeping force should be deployed immediately to end the war.

We call for the convening of the UN General Assembly based on Resolution 377A (V).

Since the UN Security Council is unable to act because of the lack of unanimity among its five veto-wielding permanent members, the assembly has the power to make recommendations for collective measures to maintain or restore international peace and security.
