All-round support vital to create anti-bullying culture

IN the wake of an incident where a young boy allegedly felt compelled to run away from his boarding school due to bullying, the spotlight has once again shifted to the issue of bullying in schools.

Parents and teachers must educate students about recognising bullying behaviour. It's important to stress on empathy and foster an environment where children feel safe to report bullying cases.

Schools should conduct workshops to sensitise students to signs of bullying and encourage communication.

Secondly, creating a supportive home environment is pivotal.

Parents should instil empathy in their children. Encouraging conversations about feelings, teaching conflict resolution and setting positive examples can shape children's attitudes toward others.

By fostering a sense of responsibility and kindness, parents can prevent bullying. We are not invincible to becoming bullies or raising one of them. This must be talked about at home.

Although it is acknowledged that teachers' burden is overloaded, teachers should still receive training on identifying and addressing bullying.

School administrations must invest in development programmes that empower educators with tools to intervene.

Clear reporting mechanisms and consequences for bullying incidents will create a safer learning environment.

The authorities should explore ways to reduce teachers' administrative tasks to support this.

Schools need to promote inclusivity, celebrating diversity and discouraging exclusionary behaviour.

Incorporating anti-bullying campaigns into the curriculum can reinforce respect and kindness.

Students should be encouraged to form alliances against bullying. Communication between parents and teachers is paramount.

Parent-teacher meetings should include discussions on anti-bullying initiatives and updates on schools' efforts.

The media can highlight anti-bullying initiatives, share success stories and educate the public about the consequences of bullying.

By making anti-bullying discussions a part of our societal dialogue, we can create a culture that rejects bullying.
