Feng Shui: Adding 'colours'at home

The five elements of Feng Shui are wood, fire, earth, metal and water. It is believed that the presence of Feng Shui elements in our home will cause it to thrive and make us healthier.

But how important is colour in Feng Shui, and how is colour associated with the five Feng Shui elements?

According to Feng Shui experts, the easiest way to get your life in order is to bring the energy of specific Feng Shui colours into your home.

“Colour is very powerful, as it is an expression of light, and too many homes (and offices) are starved for light. So, bring on vibrant light energy with beautiful Feng Shui colours,” said Rodika Tchi in an article for thespruce.com.

She said each Feng Shui element was represented by a specific colour, and colour was the easiest way to use Feng Shui’s five elements principle to bring more harmony into your home.

If you’re looking to make a change in your life, you may want to reconsider the colour schemes in your home.

The colour red, which represents the element of fire, is considered a lucky colour in Feng Shui, but make sure it is not too overpowering and avoid it in cases of anxiety or insomnia.

Blue represents calmness and peace. It’s the colour of the sky and ocean and therefore gives a sense of vastness. But avoid blue in cases of depression or when needing to feel more social.

Orange is considered a “social” colour. It is a vibrant, eye-catching and happy colour. But if you want a quiet space, avoid orange.

Green represents balance, healing, growth, freshness and abundance. The colour is good for the dining area or if you have a small living space, but make sure the green is not too dark.

Some like painting their front doors or the wall facing the entrance brown as they believe it brings better luck for them and the family.

The front door is considered the mouth of qi. It is through the front door that the house receives its Feng Shui energy.

However, the most auspicious colours for a front door are based on the compass direction it faces and its corresponding Feng Shui element. For example, the east is associated with wood, and the colours of wood are mostly brown and green.

Check with Feng Shui experts for other colours that may suit you as well as the rooms and decor in your home. Certain colours may be more suitable than others.
